UK Student Visa (Student Route) Complete Guide 2026
Getting your UK Student visa (officially called the "Student Route," formerly Tier 4) is the final major step before you can begin studying in the UK. This guide walks you through every requirement, document, and step — specifically for Pakistani nationals.
Who Needs a Student Visa?
You need a UK Student visa if you are:
A Pakistani national studying in the UK for more than 6 months
A national of any country outside the UK/EU/EEA coming to study
You do not need a visa if your course is 6 months or less (Short-Term Study visa applies instead).
Receive an unconditional offer (not conditional on further qualifications)
Accept the offer and pay any required deposit
Step 2: Receive Your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)
Your university will issue a CAS number — a unique reference that confirms your place. You need this to apply for your visa.
Key points:
The CAS is valid for 6 months from the date it is issued
You must use the same CAS for your visa application
If you change universities, you need a new CAS
Your university will send the CAS to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) electronically
Step 3: Gather Your Documents
You will need the following documents for your visa application:
Document
Details
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay + 6 months
CAS number
From your university
Academic transcripts
Original or certified copies
English language certificate
IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE (as specified by your university)
Proof of funds
Bank statements showing sufficient funds (see below)
TB test certificate
Required for Pakistani nationals (done at approved clinics)
ATAS certificate
Only for certain sensitive courses (e.g., nuclear science, advanced engineering)
Passport-size photographs
White background, 45mm x 35mm
Visa application fee
£490 (as of 2026)
Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
£776 per year of study
Step 4: Show Proof of Funds
This is the most critical part of your application. You must show you can afford:
Full tuition fees for the first year (or the full course if shorter)
Living costs as follows:
Location
Monthly Amount
For 9 months
London
£1,334
£12,006
Outside London
£1,023
£9,207
Accepted financial evidence:
Personal bank statement (showing funds held for 28 consecutive days)
Sponsor's bank statement (if someone else is funding you)
Scholarship letter (if fully funded)
Loan approval letter (from an approved lender)
Important rules:
Funds must be in an accessible account (not a fixed deposit that matures after your visa date)
The 28-day rule: The closing balance in your statement must be at or above the required amount for 28 consecutive days ending no more than 1 month before your visa application date
Cash is not accepted as proof of funds
Step 5: Complete the Online Application
Go to gov.uk/student-visa
Complete the online application form
Pay the visa fee (£490) and IHS fee online
Print your application form and checklist
Step 6: Book and Attend a Biometric Appointment
After submitting your online application, you will be directed to the TLScontact centre in Pakistan to:
Submit your biometric information (fingerprints and photograph)
Submit your supporting documents
Locations in Pakistan:
Islamabad
Karachi
Lahore
Book your appointment as early as possible — slots fill up quickly during peak season (July–September).
Step 7: Wait for a Decision
Standard processing time: 3 weeks (15 working days) from the date of your biometric appointment.
Priority processing (5 working days) may be available for an additional fee.
What to do if your visa is delayed:
Check the status online at gov.uk
Contact UKVI if it has been more than 6 weeks
Inform your university — they may be able to help
Step 8: Collect Your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit)
Once your visa is approved, you will receive a vignette (visa sticker) in your passport. This is valid for 30 days and allows you to enter the UK.
After arriving in the UK:
Collect your BRP card from the designated Post Office (the address will be on your vignette)
You must collect it within 10 days of arriving in the UK
Your BRP is your official visa document — keep it safe
