How to Choose a Study Abroad Consultant in Pakistan (2026): 7 Questions to Ask
Every year, thousands of Pakistani students hand their futures to a study abroad consultant — sometimes with great results, sometimes with expensive regrets. The industry is largely unregulated, so the burden of due diligence falls on you.
These are the 7 questions that separate a genuinely student-first agency from one that is optimised for commission.
1. "Is your core service really free — and how are you paid?"
Many agencies advertise "free consultation" but then charge file fees, processing fees, or "service charges" once you commit.
What good looks like: The agency explains plainly that it is funded by partner universities. You should never be asked to wire tuition money to the agency. All tuition goes directly to the university's official account.
Red flag: Vague answers, or a fee that appears only after you have shared your documents.
At OE Consultants, our core services — admissions, visa processing, SOP/LOR guidance, and scholarships — are always free and funded by partner universities.
2. "Who is my counsellor, and are they certified?"
You are not hiring an agency brand. You are hiring a person.
Ask: Will I have one dedicated counsellor, or will I be passed between a call centre? What credentials do they hold?
What good looks like: British Council UK Agent and Counsellor Training certification, or equivalent, is a strong signal of ethical, trained practice.
3. "How many countries do you actually cover?"
A UK-only specialist is excellent if you have already chosen the UK. But if you are still comparing options, a single-country agency cannot give you unbiased advice.
Ask: Can you compare the UK vs Canada vs Germany vs Malaysia for my budget and goals?
OE Consultants covers 9 destinations: UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Turkey. See our destination guides and agency comparisons.
4. "Which universities do you have direct partnerships with?"
A good consultant has direct relationships with the universities they recommend. This affects how smoothly your application, offer, and pre-departure steps go.
Ask: For the universities you are recommending, do you have a direct partnership or are you applying on my behalf through a portal?
5. "What exactly happens if my visa is refused?"
Visa refusal is the moment of truth for any agency.
Ask: Do you help with a reapplication? Do you review the GCMS notes (for Canada)? Do you have a documented process?
Red flag: If the answer is "you would need to pay again" or a shrug, walk away.
6. "Can I speak to past students?"
Every legitimate agency has success stories. Ask to be connected with recent students who went to your target country.
Ask: Can I speak to 2–3 students who applied in the last 12 months?
If an agency passes all seven, you are in good hands. If not, keep looking.
